Michael Torkington
Derbyshire's first Wimbledon champion?

Michael was selected in 2005, as one of only seven elite juniors, to join the first year's intake at the High Performance Academy located at Nottingham Tennis Centre.  The junior training programme provides intensive fitness and psychological training, combined with world-class tennis coaching.  The juniors spend two hours each day studying (or GCSE's) and the educational and tennis programmes are closely integrated.  This scheme is very similar to those abroad which have produced international champions, and it now provides our juniors with an equal opportunity. Michael has just turned 14 years old and he is the Derbyshire 14 & under county champion.  In August 2006 he reached the quarter-finals of the National 14 & under tournament at Wimbledon.  Michael was the highest placed 13 year olds and is conseqiently one of the favourites for this year's junior Wimbledon championship.

Michael's recent successes mean that he will now start competing internationally, and Michael was selected by the Great Britain national coach to compete last month in his first major international competition.  This included the top juniors from all over the world and Michael finished in the top 16.  Michael was excited to play at this level, and concluded that he can readily compete with the best juniors from around the globe.

Michael is seeking local sponsors to help finance his education, tennis training and travel in 2007 which is forecast to cost over £20,000.  Michael has already starred in junior matches televised by both Sky Television and the BBC, and sponsors will be able to feature their logo on Michael's kit, including his shirt and cap.  Michael regularly appears in the local media such as the Derbyshire Times and Radio Derby, and would be able to provide coaching and exhibition matches for sponsors.  Michael's progress and be tracked via the Lawn Tennis Association's website, www.lta.org.uk, and on his web-site www.michaeltorkington.com.
